Moving Checklist
Dream Realty helps buyers through what can be a scary and daunting process. Our enthusiastic team aims to make buying a home as fun as possible while keeping the process from getting overwhelming. Below is a checklist to help you with moving into your new home.
If you are need of assistance with the transition, our sister company, Dream Transitions, helps make an overwhelming process of moving easier. They offer an array of services designed to meet your needs.
Create a list of friends, relatives, and business colleagues who need to be notified -early to ensure you don’t miss anyone.
Provide the Post Office with your forwarding address 2-4 weeks ahead of the move - This ensures mail is redirected without interruption.
Notify your credit card companies, magazine subscriptions, and bank of your change of address - Prevent service disruptions and ensure important documents reach you.
Cancel the newspaper or change the address so it will arrive at your new home - Avoid unnecessary deliveries at your old address.
Arrange to disconnect utilities and have them connected at your new home - Schedule service transfers for electricity, water, gas, internet, and trash pickup.
Check with your condo or co-op about any restrictions on using the elevator or particular exits - Some buildings have move-in/move-out regulations that need advance planning.
Check the insurance coverage for the items you’re moving - Ensure you have adequate protection, as movers typically only cover what they pack.
Clean out appliances and prepare them for moving - Empty, defrost, and secure appliances like refrigerators, ovens, and washers.
Have a “first open” box with essential items - Pack necessities such as toilet paper, soap, trash bags, scissors, a hammer, a screwdriver, pencils and paper, cups and plates, water, snacks, and toothpaste for easy access on move-in day.
If you’re moving out of town, be sure to:
Get copies of medical and dental records and prescriptions for your family and pets - Ensure you have necessary health documents before leaving.
Get copies of children’s school records for transfer - Schools often require records for enrollment, so request them early.
Empty your safety deposit box - Retrieve important documents and valuables before moving day.
Consider special car needs for pets when traveling - Plan for pet comfort, safety, and necessary travel arrangements.
Put plants in boxes with holes for air circulation if you’re moving in cold weather - Ensure plants are packed properly to survive the move.
Let a friend or relative know your route - Share your travel plans in case of emergencies.
Ask friends for introductions to anyone they know in your new neighborhood - Building connections early can help ease your transition.
